About our Lion
This lion has a lot of history. It began when Jim Wilson of Crooked River Ranch posted a news release on the Woodcarver List saying he was organizing a carving event and it attracted carvers from all across the United States. This was a noncommercial fund-raising event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He selected teh MGM Grand Hotel and Casino to host the carving event as they have a large collection of lions. The carving team’s lion was larger than life-size, standing about 57 inches high and 7 feet long. (without the tail.) The Carving team had never worked together before and ranged in age from 40-year-old sculptor to a 60-year-old grandmother. After all the hard work Wilson took the lion on his 26-city tour. His carving tour made its way to Atlanta, New York, Denver, San Fransico, and many more. Eventually, it ended up back in Las Vegas where the lion was auctioned off. Years later who knew that this famous Lion would be homed in Cottage Grove Oregon due to the generous donation from Ken Means.
